Those were the words JW Dicks said to Nick Nanton in 2006 on a road trip home from an NFL game that would lead to the eventual launch of DNA (The Dicks + Nanton Agency). Nick was working for a company that JW was involved with and Nick was telling him how miserable he was at his job when JW said, “you’re fired.” “Wait… what?” Nick said. “Yea, this isn’t good for either of us,” JW replied. Nick sat there shocked for what felt like an eternity before JW asked: “So, now that you’re not busy…do you want to start a business together?”
They decided to use their two distinct skillsets— Nick’s in brand building for bands and celebrities and JW’s in direct marketing and personal branding— to launch a unique breed of law firm in late 2006.
They used their expertise in branding and marketing to grow the law firm and Nick quickly became a highly sought out entertainment lawyer for representation as well as for speaking on panels at top entertainment and law conferences. And their branding and positioning strategy worked so well that they realized their process could be helpful for other entrepreneurs and professionals.
In 2008, they wrote their first best-selling book, Celebrity Branding You®, to share the knowledge they learned as they grew their own firm. Before they knew it, Nick was traveling the world on a book tour, helping people learn how to become the best-known businessperson in their marketplace (local, regional, national, or even worldwide—depending on their individual and professional goals). Through trial and error in building their own business, Nick and JW found a recipe for success that could be implemented in any industry. As more people came to the law firm asking for help in growing their own brands and businesses, their focus shifted from law and DNA was born.
Over time, the agency has expanded into other verticals.
